Daniel Johnson Shares About His Songs

Dawn of Glory is a song that celebrates the resurrection. I think the New Testament teaches that the resurrection of Jesus is the most precious jewel in the crown of the gospel. Everything hinges on it. Even the atonement, which is so precious and vital, relies on the resurrection. So I get excited singing this song.

Guiding Hand is about trusting God through life, because of what Jesus has done through His cross and resurrection. God’s sovereignty isn’t a harsh truth to be feared, but a wonderful truth of comfort and peace. He’s our Father, and He is good to us.

By Faith is about the way we receive the blessings of the gospel. We have our sins forgiven and we are made alive with Jesus. I like the way that, even though it covers a lot of theology, the lyrics are full of imagery. This song took the longest to write.

Arise my Soul is good fun. I love the folky groove, and the band are on fire. Lyrically, it is more circular than linear. I throw light on a few different themes of who God is and how they bring us to worship.

Let Your Love has my favourite lyric I’ve ever written, in verse 2.

“Let Your cross, the mystery of Your sacrifice,

Where You chose to climb my Calvary

Be where grace destroys the temples of my pride,

Where this slave finds liberty.

Let the tomb from which You rose victorious

Be the grave where all my idols die

Let me journey ‘til I see Your glory

Let my soul be satisfied.”

An Interview with Daniel Johnson

What got you playing guitar?

My dad plays guitar, so I’m the product of a bad environment. Growing up it was always a social thing, jamming with friends and stuff.

Most embarrassing record you have purchased?

I’m not sure. I’ve got Take That’s Circus album which is great! Maybe the live DVD of that tour would be looked upon with scorn by some.

Some people know you as a blues guitarist, tell us how it feels to have brought out this traditional folk sounding EP and how do you find playing on the two styles? Does it feel very different for you or is it much more natural? Are you still playing blues guitar?

Yeah, my main style is blues guitar. Growing up I listened to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Clapton, BB King, Robben Ford…I’m most natural playing electric blues I think. But I love the harmonies of folk music, and the skill involved is amazing. I wish I could play like that. Guys like Martin Simpson blow my mind. I’m improving at my acoustic, finger-style playing. It’s a long way off my electric ability. I still play blues, but I also play pop, rock and jazz. Recently I’ve discovered Brad Paisley so I’m getting into country playing too!

Tell us about your new Ep, a bit about the songs, why you made something so different from the music you were playing before?

My new EP, Dawn of Glory, is a collection of hymns. Hymns and folk music are the only musical styles I resonate with in church. I don’t listen to much Snow Patrol and Coldplay, so I don’t listen to the Christian equivalents. I love songs that tell stories. Folk music is music where people come together to tell stories. That’s what should happen when churches sing together. God’s people telling God’s story, seeing their place in the great drama of salvation.

Is there a particular song on the Ep that captures your heart for the Ep, or that means more to you than the others?

I have different things I love about each song. I am in the process of writing blogs behind each song, which you can find here

www.danieljohnsonhymns.co.uk.

I’d say Guiding Hand of Heaven is my favourite, mainly because it’s the oldest and the one that has been sung the most in churches.

Are you planning a launch gig for this EP?

Next year I will release the follow up, so I think I’ll do a joint gig for both albums, with a full band.

The proceeds of this EP are going towards helping vulnerable street girls in Senegal, tell us why you want to do this and why street children?

I have worked in South Africa with AIDS orphans when I was younger. My church support Adam and Sarah in their ministry. Adam is a fellow musician, so I feel a kinship with him.

I’ve recently become a dad for the 2nd time. The chances of my kids having to sleep on the street or live in constant fear and danger are tiny. They were born in a wonderful hospital and will be raised without ever contemplating hunger, and perhaps never knowing illness or suffering. But every child has the same worth, value and dignity. The fact that our world is tilted so that it is the weakest who are at the bottom of the heap shows that we are so far off the Kingdom of Jesus. No child should have to live or work on the street. If the proceeds from this can help in some small way, that’s a great thing.

Sam Hailes Reviews The New Day Ep

Adam Baker - Mr Baker’s The New Day EP created a significant stir in the social media spheres I move in. After hearing the 7 track EP I understood why. There’s bucket loads of beauty, honesty and joy here. The best compliment I could give Adam is his music has universal appeal. It was a pleasure to discover his music this year.

I love this review thanks Sam Hailes. This Ep is available online at

Cross Rhythms Reviews The New Day EP

The New Day EP

This is a six-song EP from a singer/songwriter from Northern Ireland. "Come Away" has an American country feel enhanced by up-tempo percussion and synth while "New Day" adds electric guitar to the mix before the bass guitar-driven prayer "Weary Soul" showcases some powerful lyrics ("My weary soul has battle scars/An inward war that marks my heart") accompanied by some nimbly executed acoustic guitar. Acoustic chords also feature on the love song "Next To You" while the standout track has to be "The Beauty And The Broken", ably supported by electric guitar, bass and drums and vocal tones that hearken back to early Neil Young. Again it is the lyric that makes it special ("These threads of life entangled, together they are tied. . ./It's written in the fabric/Into our lives it's woven/A collision of the beauty and the broken"). Mr Baker is clearly a poetic songsmith and a name to watch out for.

New Review for The New Day EP

New Review for The New Day EP:

Adam Baker releases new EP "The New Day". Lyrical singer/songwriter style EP. Emotional and soft yet powerful vocals. Romantic mood can be felt through out the release. "Come Away" reminds a little bit of John Mayer style. EP "The New Day" it's subtle, thoughtful and professional it has it's ups and downs when it comes to tempo and mood. "The Beauty and The Broken", I can imagine it playing on the radio as you drive through highway

Des Belles Rencontres

In this blog I want to give a huge shout out to a number of busy French artist whom I had the pleasure to meet whilst Sarah and I were in Chambery.

A band I met at a festival in Thiers are releasing their first EP via a crowd funding site in France. These guys rock and they are worth checking out and supporting. They have some great rewards to for backers.

Dakar Music Update

I have not been the busiest in Dakar, I've played some gigs, and I have performed for other artists playing guitar. I have also recorded with a Senegalese singer, I played guitar on one his tracks on his soon to be released album. I have also been to some gigs, most recently I went to listen to a very well known band called Orchestra Baobab who were awesome. Gigs here start at 11pm with the opening act a short break and then the main act sometime after midnight. Nearly every gig I have been to involves food, that means you sit down and eat a meal rather than buying tickets. A lot of the venues or more like restaurants.  I have also been writing and demoing tracks, I took some time out to have a few days to focus on writing songs.
