In conversation with: Adam Baker
Our festival volunteers joined Sofar Sounds Cambridge a few weeks ago for an amazing evening of intimate music performances. One of the artists, Adam Baker has spoken to us about his Sofar Sounds experience and the importance of music and faith in his life.
Tell us a bit about your music.
It’s folk rock sounding and fits somewhere in the broad genre of singer-songwriter. Have a listen.
How did you end up getting involved with Sofar Sounds?
I came across Sofar Sounds online and as I found out what they are all about I just had to be a part of it and so I got in touch with the Sofar Sounds teams in various cities
How did you find performing a small acoustic set in an intimate setting? How does that compare with some of the larger gigs, like the London 2012 Olympic Park’s Emerging Icons Stage, that you have played?
The really special thing about Sofar is that the audience really listens to and respects the music. Its an opportunity for music lovers to appreciate a variety of artists. I really enjoyed Sofar Cambridge, I felt a deep connection with the audience and the other artists. I think that is how music should heard. There is no glam just pure honest music, it was great to play and listen.
It is really hard to compare playing something like London 2012 Emerging Icons Stage and small intimate gigs like the Sofar Cambridge gig. They are two very different experiences, both are equally as exciting and fulfilling. I just love playing and if my music connects with the audience then I am very satisfied.
You are a Christian artist. How does your faith inspire you?
My faith is a huge inspiration because I believe that God has a concern for the poor and vulnerable. My has opened my eyes to the challenges and difficulties that many people experience because of poverty, injustice and suffering. I like to write songs about such issues, as well as love and hope. My faith inspires me to live for change and transformation believing and respecting the beauty, worth and dignity in every person.
Our festival is all about bringing community together through the arts. Do you believe that music can influence people and change the world? What message do you want people to take home from your performances?
I strongly believe music can influence people to change the world, music has a way of speaking to us profoundly and moving us deeply. One song, one lyric, one melody could change your life.
Perhaps I don’t have one specific message but I hope that my music connects with people and inspires them. I would like to see people come away from my performances feeling better connected to themselves, their communities and the world. I want people to find hope in my songs.
Any plans for the future?
My wife and are resettling in the UK after having spent 18 months working with street children in Senegal (West Africa). So we will be looking for jobs and a place to live. I have some gigs coming up and I want to take some time to write new songs.
Where can we find more about you?
